A Closer Look at SQL Joins

Tue, 07/14/2009 - 18:51 — julie

SQL is by far one of the most popular and powerful languages for dealing with databases, and, to me, one of its greatest (and basic) features is the ability to join tables. Doing so is a necessity for anyone who finds himself working with two or more tables which are interconnected.

In the business world, it’s common practice to have, for example, a table with customer data and order ids, a second table containing - for each order id - the products ordered, and another table in which products descriptions are stored.

The problem arises whenever we have the need to find what products a customer, identified by a number, has ordered.

For clarity and ease of explanation and understanding, we’ll simplify the above situation just a bit.

Mon, 07/13/2009 - 17:45 — julie

While WordPress is an absolutely wonderful CMS, there are some other content management systems out there that don’t get the credit they deserve. One worth noting is the Frog CMS, an open source simple content management system. From what I can tell, the greatest thing Frog has going for it is its simplicity. It feels blazingly fast and the way everything is organized is very intuitive. 20 Masterful Digitally Painted Celebrity Portraits

Mon, 07/13/2009 - 01:54 — julie

Digital painting is becoming increasingly recognized as a respectable art form, and given the skills required, it’s easy to see why. Many digital paintings, as with traditional paintings can appear amateurish if constructed poorly. However, with a lot of a skill and a graphics tablet, a great artist can produce true works of art.

Despite the use of ‘layers’ in Photoshop, or equivalent software, digital painting is very similar to painting with oils or acrylics. It is simply the building up of colors. Often if a color is slightly off, digital painters will instead of delete a layer or brush stroke, simply continue painting over it, and adding more colors. One benefit of digital painting is that artists can choose from an absolutely huge variety of brushes, and even add in ready-made textures to their work.
