Becoming a father, being a full-time author, “always seek inspiration”, and playing World of Warcraft with his wife. This week we meet Luis Zuno (Ansimuz) from ActiveDen and ThemeForest.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

My name is Luis Zuno aka Ansimuz. I was born in Guadalajara Mexico. I am married and I’ll be a father pretty soon.

At the moment I’m a full-time author at Envato’s marketplaces, but from time to time I take some small projects.

Which marketplaces do you belong to? What types of files do you sell?

I belong to ActiveDen which was the first one I joined, then joined ThemeForest which is now my primary marketplace.

For Themeforest I do HTML templates and WordPress themes. For ActiveDen I primarily made some image galleries and small components.

How did you get started? Have you had any formal training?

I’ve been in the multimedia/web industry since 1999 when I discovered the Internet.

Yes I had some graphic design training in high school, and have a Computer Science degree from the University of Guadalajara. Also I eat tutorials from anywhere available, and I am always looking at everybody’s work to learn a bit more.

Describe your home workspace.

Actually I have two workspaces at home. I own two Mac computers on two different desks. I have a lot of printed material where i seek always inspiration and reference.

Another workspace for me is outside my house where I get all kinds of inspiration. Think Starbucks, flea markets, art galleries, malls, parks…

Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?

My first inspiration is talking to my wife about a new idea, and then we do some scratching. Whenever I get an idea I put it down on paper and then hang it on the walls.

Then i make plans and wireframes, do research and mockups. After that I sit down on the computer and start doing some graphic layouts on PSD files.

Finally I code, code and code.

What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?

Common sense says Quality over Quantity even though I don’t always follow this rule. Try to be original. (This one is key and can be very difficult to achieve.)

Another piece of advice is to always seek inspiration. Remember inspiration is not to copy somebody else’s work, but to come up with a better idea from a different one.

Also work only when you are in the mood. If you are tired or too stressed to do anything, i recommend you find a better time to start working.

What do you do to market your files?

On my own website I started to offer freebies. I also use Facebook and Twitter, and post my files on Adobe Exchange and Hotscripts.

I always use my referral link so i can do extra income at the end of the month.

What are your three favorite files, and why do you like them?

My first ThemeForest theme “Watercolor Theme“.

My third ThemeForest theme “Torn Theme“.

Finally an ActiveDen Flash component “Easy Leaf Generator” this one was one of my first items at ActiveDen marketplace.

Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?

Webmarbles was the first author I followed. I loved the quality and originality of their work. Another great author is Orman Clark, who has a clean and sleek style to his work.

And there are many others. Just look at my following list.

What do you do in your spare time?

I mostly spend my OCIO time playing World of Warcraft with my wife. Yes my dear wife is as hardcore video game player as me. Another thing I love is film – I watch a movie every day. And finally every week I spent my entire weekend with my family and friends.
