Software engineering, messy rooms, “quality is better than quantity”, and going out with friends. Today we meet Carlos Viloria from GraphicRiver and ActiveDen.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?
Hi, My name is Carlos Viloria and I’m a Software Engineer, developer and web designer (Flash, AS2/AS3 and HTML). I live in the beautiful city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, and the city is well know for its kind people. I spend most of my time making files to sell on GraphicRiver, and also working as a freelancer.
Which marketplaces do you belong to? What types of files do you sell?
I started in GraphicRiver selling textures and mock-ups. I also uploaded some Flash components and templates to ActiveDen with some friends. Over time I’ve improved my skills and now my main focus is on GraphicRiver, but I’m looking forward this year to start selling templates on ThemeForest with a different profile, Creative Vision.
How did you get started? Have you had any formal training?
Everything started when, a while ago, I saw my friend’s computer. After that I knew my life was going to drive around a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. (That was nerdy, right? lol)
Back in college, I started my degree as a Software Engineer, learning how to program with Java, but I was always attracted to the software design.
When I was completing my education, I crossed roads with Flash and fell in love with it. Then I developed a few web pages with AS2 and AS3 working with some friends for over two years. After that, I put all my energy on improving my skills in Photoshop to continue as a freelancer.
Nowadays, I work with a friend that I met thanks to GraphicRiver, Daniel_R, who is great man, businessman and a top buyer around the Envato marketplaces.
Describe your home workspace.
To be quite honest, my workplace is my own room and is kind a mess, but I promise that I will upload a picture to my personal profile or website as soon as I can. Promise.
Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?
My work is primary focused on the needs and feedback of some friends and clients. For instance, as a web designer, the web mock-ups help me to showcase my portfolio to potential clients and designers as well. Then, my creative process is about how to give a better presentation of an author’s portfolio.
What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?
How do you get to sell a lot with such a few items of your profile? That is a question I get quite frequently. “It’s not as easy as it looks,” I always say, and there is not a magic formula but to have confidence and dedication in creating original files that are not copies from somebody else work. Keeping in mind that “quality is better than quantity” has been always my moto.
What do you do to market your files?
Well, right now I’m in the process of finishing my web site, www.carlosviloria.com. I have plans to collaborate doing tutorials in Spanish for a web site and so much more ideas that will bring fresh opportunities to sell more items on GraphicRiver. I’m always connected to social media networks, like Twitter, Facebook and some forums while working in some awesome previews of my portfolio.
What are your three favorite files, and why do you like them?
Business Card – Retro
Lately there is a trend towards retro and these cards are my interpretation of that style.
Mega Pack Mock-Up #3
This file was a compilation of my best two files. It was a hard job but I managed to update a bunch of files with such high quality.
I just love this design.
Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?
I can’t talk about a specific author. There are so many great designers in this marketplace, and that has complicated my life. They put a lot of effort to bring such great files, it’s more difficult for buyers to see my files. So it would be unfair to name my favorite marketplace author.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I go out with my friends to have a couple of beers, maybe a tequila shoot, you know, have a good time dancing, laughing and enjoying my friends’ company. I like also watching movies, eating fast food, etc. I often go to the beach to relax with the sun, the wind and the sea. Cartagena is the perfect city for that.
