Getting Started With Inline SVG

Thu, 10/30/2014 - 13:12 — julie

SVG stands for “scalable vector graphics”, and the name itself is very suggestive. SVG gives us the power to scale a graphic from 100% to 1000% without losing any quality at all. An SVG file is all XML, and is a declaration of various shapes and paths inside an SVG object. Each of these shapes/paths consists of a collection of points, positions, lengths, radius, etc., depending on the shape type. If you’ve ever worked in any vector graphics software (like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw), you’ve created vector graphics that can be easily outputted as SVG.

Simple Methods for Speeding Up WordPress

Tue, 10/28/2014 - 00:15 — julie

Have you noticed the load times on your WordPress powered website aren’t so fast? Well, you’re certainly not alone.

Many of us run our sites on shared hosting platforms. They’re very affordable and convenient. After all, most site owners won’t have the resources to hire their own IT department and run an in-house server.

The downside of most shared hosting is that a WordPress site with a good bit of content and traffic can slow down significantly. There are, of course, more expensive types of hosting that alleviate much of the problem (usually with automated caching and more server resources). Then again, most of us don’t have that type of room in our budget.

The good news is that there are some things that we can do to boost the speed of our snail-like sites. Let’s take a look:

The Simple Stuff

Here are some basic things you can do to speed up your WordPress install:

An Extensive Collection of Cheatsheets for Web Designers

Thu, 10/23/2014 - 12:32 — julie

It doesn’t matter how many years of experience you have of a programming language, framework or CMS, you will always need to, from time to time, refer to the official documentation or, and more than likely, a handy quick reference cheatsheet, as it’s literally impossible to remember and know absolutely everything.

In this post I have collected an avalanche of useful cheatsheets, references, guides, checklists and docs, covering almost all aspects of web design, that will not only help to improve your productivity, but will also help to solve some of those frustrating programming issues that often arise (I’m looking at you PHP!).

Just click on the ‘view’ button beside each resource and either save the PDF or bookmark the page.

In fact, nowadays, when a prospective client does a keyword search for your product or service, they are searching in their own native language. If your website does not have the keyword published in their language, your search rank will surely suffer.

Taking Complete Control of Your Site and Content with MODX

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 08:01 — julie

Design is too important to let technology dictate what can and can’t be done. In order to keep up with rapidly changing trends, the design of a website should be as malleable as the content.

Most CMSs handle content well, but fall short when it comes to managing design. The technology imposes limitations, taxonomies, and predefined ways of doing things that may or may not be appropriate for what you’re trying to achieve. There is a better way.

MODX was built from the ground up to give you more Creative Freedom. Here are 8, count ‘em eight, reasons why MODX should be your CMS of choice.
