cPanel Basics for New Website Designers

The majority of new website designers will use a shared hosting package, because it is the least expensive and most efficient option for the majority of small business owners. With that in mind, this tutorial covers the basics of using a cPanel for creating and managing your own website.

Your web hosting company will give you a place where you can login to your control panel. This will typically be an address like:

Mydomainname.com/controlpanel

Or

Mydomainname.com:2082

Login with the username and password that your server provided and you’ll see a screen with icons that allow you to set up e-mail, backup files and so on.

It’s easy to assume that all the Tuts+ Editors are sat in Envato’s Melbourne office with the rest of the company — but you couldn’t be further from the truth! Our editor team is based all over the world, with people in the UK, Spain, Australia, and all over the USA.

Last week, the half of the editor team based in the US met for a few days in New York — we worked together, discussed the future direction of Tuts+, saw some of the city, and had the opportunity to meet our amazing readers during the community night!

A little Background Story On Previous iPage Review

A few years back I acquired a hosting account at iPage and wrote an in-depth review on it. Although I do update my iPage review from time to time; there was nothing major being re-reviewed or modified once I have fully tested the web host. My previous iPage account was left dormant and eventually expired some time ago.

Thanks to some active readers who sent me emails and Twitter messages, I picked up my lazy bones and signup myself again with a brand new iPage account*.

If you aren’t comfortable with radial gradients, overlay layers and clipping mask layers and have a good foundation level of artistic skill this tutorial probably isn’t for you. Oh, and you should definitely have a graphics tablet; it would be grog induced folly to try this with a mouse!

Free Access on Tuts+ Premium

Last week, Tuts+ Premium experienced a major outage following a security compromise. On Saturday we issued a refund to all members who were paying subscribers on June 26th when the issues began. In addition we announced that we would be giving free access to anyone who, prior to June 26th, had ever signed up, even if their membership had expired or they’d never completed their initial purchase.

It was a bad situation, and I’d again like to apologize to all the affected users. We hope that this period of free access will be a small step to repairing our user’s faith and trust in Envato and Tuts+ Premium.

Drawing Activetuts+ to a Close

Activetuts+ launched in 2009 with the aim of teaching how to build websites, apps, animations, and interfaces in Flash. Much has changed in the industry over the past few years, and Activetuts+ has evolved several times to continue teaching relevant content.

As of today, we are going to be drawing Activetuts+ to a close in order to concentrate our focus on better covering several exciting new areas of education.

After the break we’ll be explaining our thinking behind the decision, what we’ll be doing with our archive of content, and our plans for the future.
