Start Using CSS3 Today: Techniques and Tutorials

“We have been publishing articles about CSS3 for a while now, and we keep receiving angry e-mails from some developers who complain that it doesn’t make sense to use CSS3 today. Yes, Internet Explorer doesn’t support most CSS3 properties. And yes, CSS3 vendor prefixes are bad for maintainability (and this is why we recommend extracting vendor prefixes in a separate CSS3 file).

Learn HTML5: 10 Must Read Lessons

Wed, 06/16/2010 - 11:04 — julie

What’s up with the hype of HTML5?

HTML5 is currently being developed as the next major revision of HTML and it is still far away from W3C recommended release date (year 2022 or later). However with the release of Apple iPad, the topic is got extremely heated and almost every web designer are talking/reading/writing/blogging/twitting about it.

Moreover, many early adapters (web developers and geeks) started creating some cool stuffs wtih the cleaner HTML5/CSS3 codes. In case you wanted to be one of them but don’t know where to start, here are list of useful HTML5 tutorials to get you started. It’s been a long week searching and reading on these tutorials (hey, I’m new to this too!) – I hope you make good use of them. Also, if you are one of the authors of these tutorials – I couldn’t thank you guys enough! It’s been a great learning journey reading each of these; thank you very, very much.

HTML5 Microdata: Welcome to the Machine

Tue, 06/15/2010 - 07:32 — julie

HTML5 Microdata: Welcome to the Machine:

“I don’t think it is hyperbole to say that HTML5 will change the way that you think about web development. I welcome many of the changes as they make development easier, and the user experience richer. With any change, though, there is certain to be a bit of trepidation and controversy. One addition that certainly is not without its controversy is the Microdata specification, but I believe the benefits of this very simple specification are going to change how you look at your mark-up in the very near future.”

Take 10 Years Off a Male Portrait Via Photo Retouching

Tue, 06/15/2010 - 01:16 — julie

Male Photo Retouching

Traditionally tutorials have always focused on how to retouch female photographs. This is linked with the traditional media conventions of women as sex symbols, who are regrettably objectified as part of daily media. Whilst these conventions are applying more and more to men (particularly celebrities), a man can show imperfections and get away with it far more. For example, wrinkles can ’show character’, gray hair can look sexy – things that would be impossible for a woman to be perceived as.

Display icons using a single image and CSS “Sprites”

Wed, 06/02/2010 - 23:29 — julie

Recently, I have been working on a website that has numerous icons being displayed on a single page. One of the ways to reduce server requests is to store all of your icons in a single image and use CSS to display only the portion of the image you need for a particular location on your page. This technique is commonly used by designers to display icons from a single image. It is often termed CSS sprites.

First, lets take a look at an image with the icons we will be using. I have chose these grunge icons for this example. You can find icons on just about any stock photography site or if you are adventurous make your own.
