Best Of The Web October For Web/Graphic Design
An HTML-Friendly Template System using PHP’s Output Buffering
Template systems are an important component of today’s websites. Most of them are designed so that you have to include single splitted header and footer templates into every page. Let’s see whether we can create a template system that does not destroy the natural markup structure of the surrounding HTML at the top and the bottom of a web page.

The Problem
If you want to use a template engine you can choose from many mature and feature rich solutions. Nevertheless there is one thing most of them have in common: It’s their basic concept of including one template into another.
50 Terrifying Retro Horror Movie Posters
I really love looking at old poster designs, and movie posters offer some of the most unique, creative designs! This Halloween, I’ve compiled 50 excellent retro horror movie poster designs to help inspire you.
Almost all of the movie concepts here made me laugh out loud, but I’m sure that you can appreciate the designs, even if you don’t want to go and see ‘Killer Klowns From Outer Space’! ;).
I’ve also noticed a few techniques employed in creating these posters, which I’ll list here, but may integrate into an upcoming tutorial!
Strong Lighting/Shadows - This technique is used in almost all retro movie posters, particularly for horror movies. Shadows are very intense, with a very high contrast between the highlights and shadows. The illustrations are often bold and high contrast.

ActiveDen and Activetuts: New Names, Same Awesome Content
For just over three fantastic years FlashDen has been the jewel in Envato’s crown. It is our longest running and most active community, and thanks to the amazing authors who showcase their work there, has become the largest marketplace for Adobe Flash files in the world with over 8,500 items for sale.
Last week Adobe asked us to change our name and URL so that it would no longer contain the term ‘Flash’, which is a registered trademark of Adobe. We know that the success of our sites is about the community and content, not the names. So here at Envato HQ we’ve been busy thinking up new names and we think we’ve found a great new home for both our marketplace and our Tuts+ blog on Flash.

7 Things I Wish I Had Known About jQuery
This article is mostly aimed at people who are just starting to learn jQuery. I assume you know the following:
- Base knowledge of JavaScript
- What jQuery is
- How to include jQuery in a web page
- Basic knowledge of how to use the $ function (for example: $(’#test .testing’))
- Basic understanding of the chainable events
- Know what $(document).ready(function () { }); does (sometimes seen as $(function () {} ); or $().ready(function() {});)
- Know intermediate HTML and CSS (lists, padding, colors, borders and margin)
If you don’t know anything about how to use jQuery you should read this. This is not meant to be an introduction to jQuery. This is meant for people who have tried jQuery and may have been frustrated because they weren’t sure how to do something correctly.
The Ultimate List of Resources for Creating and Styling 3D Text in Photoshop
3D text is becoming more and more popular with designers, yet many people still struggle with producing and styling it professionally.
The aim of this post is not to grab 100 random text tutorials that you’ve come across before. That would be of no use to anyone! Instead, I’ve selected a few incredibly helpful tutorials, each of which focus on different aspects of producing/styling 3D text. This guide is meant to teach you every different aspect involved in the basics of this process.
I’ve compiled the post into two main sections. The first teaches you several different ways to produce 3D text from scratch in Photoshop (i.e.: without using any 3d software whatsoever). Each method is very different, and so should give you a few ideas to work with. The second main part teaches you how to style 3d text in Photoshop, to really make it pop, and look super professional!

Please let me know your favorites and where you may get a chance to use them.

Hi again, how have you guys been? Remember in our last tutorial (Setup Your First Blogspot Blog) we created our Blogger account and also configured it to our liking? Today, we’re writting our first post! I hope you’re as excited as I am. I still remember writing my first post on my birthday year 2005 describing what my blog is all about. iPage Hosting is officially here!
Not long ago I was talking about the ‘come back’ of iPage and yes, they are now officially here. iPage launched October 1st, 2009 and here’s a quick print screen of their website.
What’s about iPage?
iPage web services
Confession: I thought the new iPage is all about hosting when I first saw their ‘coming soon’ page. Apparently, I was wrong. iPage is a lot more than just a hosting service provider. The company provides everything you need to start a website – web hosting, website mangement, email hosting, domain registration, e-commerce services, website scripting, as well as web marketing are all supported by iPage.

Everything you Need to Know About Font Licensing for the Web
Unless you’re a copyright or digital media licensing pro, font licensing can be really confusing. Custom fonts are increasingly being used on the web via several methods. Each method may require specific licensing to cover your intended use and often times font licenses simply don’t specify restrictions associated with these new technologies.
In this article, we’ll take a look at font licensing for web usage via methods such as FLIR, sFIR, Cufón, @font-face, etc. and ways to protect yourself.
Cover Your Butt
Read the EULA (End User License Agreement) of every piece of digital media you want to use and make sure it permits you to use it in the way you intend. If you’re not sure, do yourself a favor and double check by asking the author before you use it. If the license doesn’t specify restrictions for your intended use, assume the license does not permit it and get explicit permission directly from the author first.
