@font-face and 15 Free Fonts You Can Use Today

Fri, 08/28/2009 - 19:47 — julie

Fonts are a huge part of design (as we all know). Text on the web needs to be much more dynamic than in any other media. We have solutions like Cufón, sIFR, etc. but perhaps one of the better options is using @font-face in CSS.

We’ll take a quick look at using @font-face in CSS and 15 great free fonts you can start using today.

What is @font-face?

@font-face is a CSS rule that lets web designers link to a font that visitors may not have installed. Using this, we can get around the problem of web-safe fonts as well as prevent creating additional dependencies in other methods such as Cufón, sIFR, etc.

Once the font is linked, it is used just like you would use any other font in your CSS. Imagine the possibilities! Unfortunately, there are concerns from many font foundries and others that is currently limiting the use of this rule.

10 Ways To Add Value To Your Service And Build Customer Loyalty

Wed, 08/26/2009 - 23:24 — julie

Many businesses fail because of the lack of value they give to their customers. I have wrote a quick handy guide on how to increase value to your website service / product, and build loyalty with existing customers and new ones. Adding value to your service allows you to raise the product price, so you earn more money, or keep the price the same, but conversion rates and customer satisfaction with the product will be higher. Anyway here is my guide. If you want to share a tip you have to add value, drop us a comment.

Your Product Needs To Be Unique

Theres no point in having an exact duplicate of another product / service. You want to offer something unique to your customers. Your product needs to be in a league of its own, so when people come to look at it, they will be like “that’s awesome, no other service offers some of these features” etc.

Add Social Bookmarks to your WordPress Theme

Wed, 08/26/2009 - 20:41 — julie

In this short tutorial, we’ll be adding buttons to our WordPress theme to allow visitors to easily submit the current article to social bookmarking sites like Delicious, Reddit, Digg, StumbleUpon, Twitter and Facebook.

All of these sites provide a simple way to create these buttons. For example, to add an article to Reddit, the URL is: http://www.reddit.com/submit?url=THE-URL&title=THE-TITLE. As you can see, we just have to fill in the URL and the title for the submission.

I implemented this functionality into my recent ‘ target="_blank" href="http://themeforest.net/item/magazine-otuts/38654">Magazine o’Tuts‘ template:

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2418" src="http://blog.themeforest.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/share.png" alt="share" width="570" height="64"/>

Interview with Founders of Envato Collis and Cyan

Thu, 08/20/2009 - 11:45 — julie

One of the best things about working here at target="_blank" href="http://envato.com">Envato is that we have an awesome team of people building, managing, writing, reviewing and working on our sites. Yep, things have come a long way since the early days when there was just a few of us trying to do everything!

Recently our awesome Tuts+ interviewer target="_blank" href="http://psd.tutsplus.com/author/emil/">Emil asked if I minded being video interviewed with some questions target="_blank" href="http://psd.tutsplus.com/articles/news/interview-with-the-founder-of-envato-collis-taeed/">put forward by the Psdtuts+ readers. Since no-one really wants to see my enormous head on screen for too long a period of time, I asked my lovely wife and partner in crime Cyan if she’d be in on the interview and we thought we’d put up the video to help celebrate 3 years of Envato.

Mon, 08/17/2009 - 18:05 — julie

It’s been a few weeks since the last entry in this series. Today’s Q and A comes courtesy of Alex Sandings.

The Question

Hi, Jeffrey! I’ve seen a few themes on this site that have a cool effect where you hover over an image, it then slides out of view, and a description is revealed. Can you demonstrate how to replicate this effect?

The Solution

Hey Alex! I think I know what you’re talking about. I created a quick and dirty mock-up of what I think you’re referring to. Does this fit the bill?

Demo

If so, it’s actually quite easy. Let’s get started.

Step 1

Open a new document in Photoshop with the size 900px by 1100px. Create a rectangular selection at the top of your document using the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), then drag a gradient from the top to the middle of your selection, using the colors #737373 and #1e1e1e.

Simple Layouts with PHP

Tue, 08/11/2009 - 18:10 — julie

This tutorial is for those starting out in PHP and want to learn a great way to create layouts. This will help reduce redundancy and keep you from writing too much code.

Download the Source

Anyone that has been developing HTML based sites for some time has undoubtedly ran in to the issue of keeping the design consistent across multiple pages. Most websites follow a similar layout to the picture. This is great unless you have sites that require multiple pages. What happens when that one link is changed from say “Contact Me” To “Contact Us”? Well you have to go in to each of the pages and update the code. That is slow and prone to error if you forget a page or something. So we want to employ PHP to solve that problem for us. There are actually two ways I am going to cover and at the end I’ll let you know which I prefer and why.

15 Great And Free Photoshop Alternatives

Thu, 08/06/2009 - 17:47 — julie

Adobe Photoshop is definitely the most powerful image editing software. It had a lot of great features and can be used by professional such as web designers and graphics designers. Its filters, plugins, actions, brushes and easy-to-use are the main reasons why most designers prefer Photoshop than other tools.

However, Photoshop is very expansive and not all designers afford to buy the original license of it. So, some designers try to look for free alternatives to Photoshop. If you are one of them, you consider yourself lucky as we are going to look into 15 Great And Free Photoshop Alternatives today.

Building Better Template Documentation

Wed, 08/05/2009 - 21:27 — julie

Since I’ve started reviewing templates, I’ve seen non-existent template documentation up to screen-cast tutorials covering much more than required. In the long run, a more thorough documentation will save you time.

Building on the Help File Template by Jeffrey, I’ve put together an HTML version to step it up a notch.

The Help File Template

Back in October, Jeffrey put together a basic help file text document to serve as a template for Theme Forest authors. I see it used all the time which is great because it’s simple and functional. More and more frequently however, I see authors using new types of documentation that really add extra value and sometimes functionality for buyers.

Important Change to the WordPress License Takes Effect Today! Please Read.

Tue, 08/04/2009 - 07:30 — julie

Last month, I notified you all that, to better preserve the spirit of WordPress, beginning August 4th, WP themes will be sold with two licenses: all WP code will come with a GPL license, which allow for redistribution; the remaining HTML, CSS, JavaScripts, and images, luckily, will still retain our standard license.

Do I Need to Change Anything When Uploading New Items?

Yes. When you upload your “Main” zip file (the folder that contains all of your theme files, images, and help documentation zipped up), you’ll need to create a new directory within the root and call it “Licensing.” Within this folder, include the GPL license – which can be downloaded here.
