10 Typography Tips to Bring your Skills to the Next Level

Thu, 07/30/2009 - 22:14 — julie

An often overlooked aspect of web design, by those just starting out, is typography. In fact, web designers that have been around for a couple years even have a tendency to overlook and undervalue the power of typography. Don’t be mistaken though, it’s one of the most powerful tools web designers have.

In this article, we’ll review ten web typography tips that will bring your typographic design skills to the next level.

1. Leading

Leading is the space between lines of text and probably one of the more commonly known elements of typography. Leading will greatly effect the readability of your text content. Leading will need to be changed based on the type face, size, weight and measure (covered next) used.

I generally stick with about 2-5pt’s larger leading than font size depending on the type face, size, etc. and how it feels reading it.

Working with Sessions and Cookies in PHP and MYSQL

Wed, 07/22/2009 - 04:18 — julie

Security is an essential component for any site to be successful. However, adding security can increase overhead and annoy your users if not done properly. In this tutorial, I will discuss common problems that are encountered when using sessions and cookies.

Cookies

Cookies are ways for the user to be identified by a website. For instance, a site will create a cookie with the name: “favorite_color” and the value: “red”. Now, each time that you visit the site, it will load the cookie and establish that your “favorite_color” is “red”. This can be quite effective in remembering users, so a user does not have to log in each time they visit your site. The “Remember Me”, seen in many sites, uses this method. However, this can also create some serious security holes.

30 Awesome Twitter Inspired Logo Designs

More Than Just a Bird…

These days almost every designer seems to be using Twitter. Consequently some hugely creative Twitter-spin-off sites have cropped up - many with awesome logos!

What’s amazing is how popular the Twitter brand has become. Logo designers can really push the abstract nature of design to it’s limits, as the Twitter bird has become an instantly recognizable symbol, along with it’s signature light-blue color. The 30 logos below showcase the immense creativity of logo designers as they adapt the much-recognized Twitter brand to fit their respective websites and services.

Please let me know which are your favorites, which you don’t like so much, or perhaps just those that you think show the most imagination.

A Closer Look at SQL Joins

Tue, 07/14/2009 - 18:51 — julie

SQL is by far one of the most popular and powerful languages for dealing with databases, and, to me, one of its greatest (and basic) features is the ability to join tables. Doing so is a necessity for anyone who finds himself working with two or more tables which are interconnected.

In the business world, it’s common practice to have, for example, a table with customer data and order ids, a second table containing - for each order id - the products ordered, and another table in which products descriptions are stored.

The problem arises whenever we have the need to find what products a customer, identified by a number, has ordered.

Table Setup

For clarity and ease of explanation and understanding, we’ll simplify the above situation just a bit.

20 Masterful Digitally Painted Celebrity Portraits

Mon, 07/13/2009 - 01:54 — julie

Digital painting is becoming increasingly recognized as a respectable art form, and given the skills required, it’s easy to see why. Many digital paintings, as with traditional paintings can appear amateurish if constructed poorly. However, with a lot of a skill and a graphics tablet, a great artist can produce true works of art.

Despite the use of ‘layers’ in Photoshop, or equivalent software, digital painting is very similar to painting with oils or acrylics. It is simply the building up of colors. Often if a color is slightly off, digital painters will instead of delete a layer or brush stroke, simply continue painting over it, and adding more colors. One benefit of digital painting is that artists can choose from an absolutely huge variety of brushes, and even add in ready-made textures to their work.
